The following outlines steps that may need to be taken in setting up a Zebra printer. The following uses as GK420d as the example.

Label size

In the printer preferences the printer size should be set correctly. The standard SSCC label is 4x6 inches

Printing format

Some Zebra printer can print pdf documents directly which is our default. For printers such as the GK420 is does not support pdf's. If this is the case you can set the print type to

  • ZPL Print. This will send zpl directly to the printer (converts pdf to an image and sends encoded in ZPL commands)
  • Adobe PDF print. The system will look for an installed copy of Adobe and issue the print commands through Adobe. (this is the same as printing from Adobe itself)

Incorrect Label Placement

There is many reasons that could cause this, please check the following

Check the printer preferences and make sure the margins and unprintable areas are set correctly.

If using a redirect or share printer then check the machine it is printing on as it may have incorrect settings. Note we have also seen the print spoolers changing the dimensions slightly.

Recalibrate the printer. For the GK420 hold the button down. The green light will flash once, then twice. One it flashes twice then release the button and the printer will recalibrate.

Recalibrate for the media. For the GK420 hold the button down. The green light will flash once, then twice, then ... etc One it flashes 7 times then release the button and the printer will print calibrate to the loaded paper stock

Check the label dimensions. For the GK420 hold the button down. The green light will flash once, then twice, then ... etc One it flashes 5 times then release the button and the printer will print the available dimensions

Check the darkness level. For the GK420 hold the button down. The green light will flash once, then twice, then ... etc One it flashes 6 times then release the button and the printer will print the available darkness's

Reset the printer back to factory default (this will erase any custom settings). For the GK420 hold the button down. The green light will flash once, then twice, then ... etc One it flashes 4 times then release the button and the printer will reset to factory default settings

Export the labels as a PDF an open in Adobe. Do a print preview, it should look as expected. Then print to the printer. Did it come out as shown on screen?
